The HERnia Surgeons Alliance (HERSA) has officially joined the SurgeOn community, creating expanded opportunities for its network of female hernia surgeons, collaborators of all genders, researchers, trainees, industry partners, and patients to connect, advance knowledge, and drive improvements in hernia care throughout the year.
HERSA is a multi-institutional collaboration of dedicated female hernia surgeons focused on advancing sex-specific hernia research, delivering exceptional evidence-based clinical care, and mentoring the next generation of hernia surgeons. With the mission of optimizing treatment options for women, improving outcomes in hernia surgery for female patients, and amplifying the contributions of female hernia surgeons, HERSA addresses important disparities and fosters innovation through inclusive partnerships.
By joining SurgeOn, HERSA now offers its members and supporters a private, surgeon-built platform designed for sustained engagement, extending the impact of initiatives like the “Core Conversations” podcast, research collaborations, patient education events, and live discussions.
Through this partnership, HERSA participants can engage in dedicated spaces within SurgeOn, participate in peer-to-peer exchanges, mentorship opportunities, and access persistent, searchable resources. The goal is clear: to make it easier for hernia specialists and teams to stay connected, refine approaches tailored to sex-specific needs, and apply practical insights in everyday practice.
Within SurgeOn, HERSA participants have access to:
- Private, specialty-focused groups for in-depth discussions on sex-specific hernia research, techniques, patient outcomes, and best practices
- Opportunities for case sharing, collaborative research initiatives, and mentorship connections
- Persistent educational content, including insights from HERSA podcasts, events, and evidence-based discussions
- Platform tools such as SurgeOn Scribe to enhance documentation, case logging, and workflow efficiency for hernia specialists
This partnership reinforces HERSA’s emphasis on research, education, mentorship, patient advocacy, and inclusive collaboration while utilizing SurgeOn’s secure digital infrastructure to minimize barriers and sustain momentum.
We are thrilled to announce the integration of the HERnia Surgeons Alliance into SurgeOn. This dedicated community space will keep vital conversations alive long after podcasts, live events, or collaborative sessions conclude—supporting multi-institutional research, elevating female hernia surgeons, and ultimately improving care for women with hernias. We hope this becomes a valuable addition for HERSA members and the broader hernia community.
Jenny Shao, MD, and fellow HERSA board members (including Jana Sacco, MD; Dina Podolsky, MD; Charlotte Horne, MD; Sabrina Drexel, MD; Courtney Collins, MD; and Kaela Blake, MD) expressed excitement about the partnership, noting the value of a secure, members-only forum to exchange ideas, mentor emerging surgeons, advance female-specific research, and apply evidence-based advancements continuously.
Mark Soliman, MD, CEO of Surgery Unified, added, “HERSA’s dedication to sex-specific hernia care, addressing disparities, and uplifting female surgeons is making a real difference. Integrating their community into SurgeOn aligns with our mission to build one unified, secure hub where surgeons and teams can share specialized knowledge, collaborate without limits, and advance patient care for all.”
For HERSA members, collaborators, and supporters, this means:
- More consistent collaboration through dedicated spaces focused on hernia surgery and sex-specific care
- Ongoing access to resources, discussions, mentorship, and research that persist beyond episodic events or podcasts
- Quicker exchange of insights, best practices, and evidence to elevate hernia repair outcomes, especially for women
As hernia surgery continues to evolve—with increasing emphasis on tailored, sex-specific approaches, minimally invasive techniques, and equity in patient outcomes—this collaboration underscores a shared commitment to inclusive education, meaningful professional connections, and ongoing enhancement of care delivery.
